Jaina Proudmoore is one of the stronger voices to be hostile towards the Horde. They can not be fighting both each other and the Legion so opinions are a bit divided. The other leaders will help him out with some crying out for vengeance for the betrayal on the Broken Shore, while others call for union. On the alliance side it’s Varian’s son Anduin that takes over, but he does not stand alone. Sylvanas is appointed to take over from Vol’jin as he was only recently appointed to take over from Garrosh at the end of Mists of Pandaria. However, his plot continues in Battle for Azeroth and if you don’t mind spoilers, check out this article and cutscene with Princess Talanji. Many players were sad that Vol’jin did not get a proper storyline as the Warchief, being appointed at the end of MoP and being fairly absent in the Warlords storyline. While Anduin and Sylvanas did not play major roles in Legion, mostly leaving the leadership to the various Order Halls, they are the focus of the Battle for Azeroth expansion. You can view these in-game as part of the Harbinger achievement by finding books hidden around the world.

Learn more about the Broken Shore on Wowhead: Varian is forced to sacrifice himself to give the troops a chance to escape which means that, with Varian disenchanted and Vol’jin dying from the demon’s poison, some change in leadership for both sides took place. Warchief Vol’jin tells the banshee queen that they cannot die this day so Sylvanas is forced to call the retreat which appears to some amongst the Alliance as a betrayal.

The Broken Shore was a death trap and the Horde is unable to hold its ground. We fought hard and killed many demons, but this was an invasion from the Legion unlike any we’ve seen before. King Varian Wrynn leads the assault for the Alliance with Sylvanas Windrunner leading the Horde troops with the remainder of our forces joining them later on. Khadgar and Maiev try to stop him but fail too, so Khadgar goes about warning the world and the Alliance and Horde make their way to the Broken shore. He travels to the tomb of Sargeras, unlocks the powers stored inside, and brings the Legion in. Alternate Gul’dan is sent over to our Azeroth to start a new invasion of the Legion. So Legion began with the ending of Warlords of Draenor.
